NEW PHISH SHOW MAPPING PROJECT

[We'd like to thank Steven Gripp for this post, and for his work on this Phish mapping project. You can learn more about the project by watching Steven describe it on the Helping Friendly Podcast. We also wanted to give a shout out to The Phishsonian's show mapping project —Ed.]

For the past three years, I’ve embarked on a project that I feel really encapsulates the epic journey of Phish. Knowing that, while we have all gazed at the wonder of Phish’s illustrious 40-year career, reminiscing on how they’ve become what they have become goes back to all the places they have been. I’ve mapped out on Google Earth every Phish show, from their first performance in the back of the Harris-Mills Cafeteria all the way to their ambitious Gamehendge performance at Madison Square Garden. From their beginnings in downtown Burlington, to their cross-country tours, to their European and Japanese excursions, all have been placed for the user experience to see where Phish has traversed. I’ve been a phan since 1996, and I’ve always wanted to give back to the community. I feel that finishing this project right at their 40 year anniversary has a serendipity and timing to take the listening experience to the next level.

When you click on the link, it will take you to the collection of shows of that era. Clicking on the slide show will start you from the beginning. I’ve put links to albums, books, and blogs/vlogs that represent that era. When you click on a show, clicking on the date of that show will give you the show review, and clicking on the venue will give you the audio. I’ve also added Youtube video links if there was a video recording of that show, as well as additional essays. You can do it from your laptop, or Google Earth app. The experience of seeing their history will give a sense of their story, the progression of their music, and their loyal phandom, and allow you to fully engage in what makes Phish one of the greatest. This is evergreen content, so it will always be ever-changing; please let me know if there is something that you notice that needs to be changed. Thank you.

Land2reform Super cool. I don't see anything for Huntsville, Al on the map. Maybe I'm reading it wrong, but they did play there this past summer.

That would make this project perfect, I tried to find a way, but Google Earth doesn't have that feature (at least not that I know of.) If I find out, I will share how to do it.

MegaMan @thegripp - Reach out if you are interested in enhancements/additions - I work over at Esri (ArcGIS, blah blah) and doing something like this has always been in the back of my head... I can envision a couple different ways to display the data that could make it really fun - and the 'public submissions' of photos/etc. could be a really neat enhancement as well. (bbaldwin AT esri.com).

JSSoda As someone that lives in Utah, and attended that show. I have to say I LOVE what venue you chose as the title image. However I have no idea what is going on with the lawn in that picture from Google Earth. I have never been to a show at that place where it looked that horrible, it is usually VERY green.
Anyway, thanks for putting this together! Amazing!
